Are there reliable Genealogy services for a reasonable cost?

I think I have reached the end of what I can find on line in the way of my ancestors. I don't have any immediate family so there isn't anyone to ask questions. I assume there are professional researchers that could help me. Can you suggest one you had success with that doesn't charge an arm and a leg?
