How do you boil a 8.5 lb shank portion Bone in ham?

I have found tons of recipes for baking a bone in ham but none for just boiling it. My husband prefers boiled ham. It is a cook's hickory smoked "ready-to-eat" ham. How long would I boil it for and is it safe to boil it rather than bake?
