Is a sponsor required for a Korean D-2 Visa?

Is it REQUIRED? The form says "Guarantor or Reference in Korea," but the instructions say "Sponsor, may be non-Korean." I don't even really understand how visa sponsorship works let alone have one, I think, besides the school I'll be studying at.
