What to do with an Employment reference?

I'm asking for a reference from one of my teachers just before I leave school so I know I've definitely got one if I decide to get a summer job and I get asked for one, so you know when you ask someone for a reference for employment, can they send it to you so you can then send it to your possible employer or do they need to send it directly to your employer?
